Jeff knew he wanted to be a teacher since 6th grade. Wanting to share his lifelong love of learning, he earned his BA at Olivet College (now the University of Olivet) in secondary education for Biology and Social Studies. A powerful and impressive experience substituting at Starr Commonwealth, a residential program for adjudicated and trauma impacted youth, led him to continue his education when offered a position there. He earned his MA in Special Education for children with emotional impairments at Western Michigan University, and has spent more than 20 years in the classroom in both regular and special education settings, always utilizing the most effective available technology in his teaching.
Always a technophile, Jeff became fascinated with advances in the field of AI and saw enormous potential for its positive impact on education. "I saw right away how this can tackle the problem many teachers like myself have been dealing with in recent years- how to handle increasing responsibilities in the limited time available to us. As a special educator I was especially excited about how this technology could make scaffolding and differentiating learning that much easier, and for the students I saw opportunities for them to get the one one one help they needed, even in classrooms where teachers were stretched to the limit by overwhelming class sizes."
But he also saw barriers. "Change is hard for anyone. It's difficult when we have to consider some of the skills we've taught for many years may be obsolete soon- but our field has experienced that many times in the past, and with the right support we can do it again."
To provide that support, Jeff started The AI Powered Teacher to help educators and schools come to terms with this transformative technology and learn to use it effectively. "The more I talked to educators around the country about AI, the more I saw a need for training and guidance. It presented an exciting opportunity I couldn't resist."
In addition to teaching and training, Jeff is a published writer, video gamer, and avid moviegoer.
